Kimberly Michelle Pate, known by her stage name K. Michelle, is an powerhouse vocalist, a songwriter, television personality and a pianist from Memphis Tennessee. She's been in the music industry for years. Once signed to Jive records and managed by than boyfriend Mickey "Memphitz" Wright (right image), former Jive records executive. Her perseverance to be heard and seen was great, but it was her appearance on the hit reality television show Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, that catapulted her career.
During Michelle appearance on the show, her musicality was great, but her past relationship issues took center stage. She talked about a time in her life when she was physically abuse by her record executive and than boyfriend. She never said a name on the show. She went into details describing the day that she became a survival of domestic violence. Michelle said that an argument between her and her boyfriend (Mr. Wright) started in a Memphis hotel. She said that when she attempted to leave, a towel was placed over her mouth and she was dragged back into the room, a water bottle was thrown at her and she received some rug-burns. Michelle also claimed that, the man (Wright) threatened to kill her son. Although she never mentioned his name, the blogs and people figured out that she was talking about him and this led to a social media war. Wright wanted to go on the show, but his wife Toya Wright turned down the offer. Insisting that this public knowledge ruin his career and character, Wright filed a defamation lawsuit against Michelle, the owners of VH1 and producers of the network’s hit show “Love And Hip Hop Atlanta.” The lawsuit was filed on Sept. 5, 2012 in the United States Northern District of Georgia. Wright asked for $15 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.
Although Wright sued, he did admit in court that, "he put a pillow and/or his hands over Michelle's mouth to try to shut her up during a physical altercation in a Memphis hotel in 2009." He admitted to spending her money from Jive Record’s budget for jewelry, not to help her career and that he sent a text message threatening to kill Michelle’s son. Due to his admission and being unable to provide evidence to support his defamation claims, the Fulton County judge Robert McBurney decided in favor of the defendants. According to final court judgment. “The record shows that they reasonably believed Defendant Pate during production of LHHA and that they still do today.” Michelle left Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, now has a very successful music career and her own spinoff show on the VH1.
Michelle fans used social media to attack a few of the people that called Michelle a liar. Rapper Rasheeda far left, Tamar Braxton, middle image and Toya Wright estrange wife of rapper Lil Wayne and she is currently separated from current husband Mickey Wright. Toya said that this case played a contributing factor in their split. Now that this is over, I'm hoping that Michelle can find her healing after being vindicated because there's nothing worse than being abuse and being called a liar for speaking up, which is a form of abuse in itself.
